1st CASPIAN EUROPE FORUM – Hybrid Conference

1 October 2020, Hotel Titanic Gendarmenmarkt, Berlin

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

The Caspian Sea, as the world’s largest inland sea and the interface between Europe and Asia, with the region’s economic, cultural and ethnic ties, makes the Caspian region the heart of Eurasia.

The Caspian region with its vast oil and gas reserves is an increasingly important source of energy. The region is also an important transit hub for various goods and plays an important role in the Belt and Road Initiative and the North-South corridor, among others. The sea’s ports in Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Iran and Turkmenistan are strategic intersections of several international transport corridors, which also include Uzbekistan, Georgia, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkey.

With the Caspian Europe Forum, we are creating a platform to discuss with experts the importance of this agreement and the cooperation between the countries in the region for Europe and the opportunities for European companies in the fields of energy, sustainibilty, logistics and infrastructure.

There are many questions that has to be discussed:

  • How have the states in the region reacted to the Covid-19 pandemic?
  • Will the agreement between the five littoral states in August 2018 on the convention on the legal status of the sea pave the way for foreign trade and investment?
  • What are the opportunities for European SMEs?
  • What is the role of the Caspian region in the European energy security?
  • What is the impact of climate change on the Caspian Region?
  • How is the cooperation between the EU and Central Asia in sustainable development?

We will find answers to these and many other questions at the Caspian Europe Forum, and I will be delighted if you would join us!

With kind regards
